White Water Rafting on The River Tay
The River Tay is one of the most famous white water rafting rivers in the UK. Offering some of the best fishing available anywhere in the World, it is talked about regularly on TV, in the press and in many different and diverse circles.
Normally the activity of white water rafting takes place on the Aberfeldy to Grandtully section, it is brilliant for beginners and intermediates, wishing to get out on the river for an adrenalin rush.
In the winter months the water levels can get very high so sometimes we do have to raise the minimum age, but in the summer months ages 8 and above are able to join us. The Tay is the ultimate river for playing games.
When is best to white water raft on the River Tay?
The River Tay is white water raft-able all year round, but as with everything, there are always better times than others. There is no rafting available on Tuesday and Thursdays as we have a gentleman's agreement with the fishermen. Therefore morally no rafts should be on the River Tay on these days.
The River Tay is a natural river and so in the summer months it is great for that first experience or for teenagers. In the winter months she becomes a completely different creature. Traditionally the levels are at their highest at the end of January to the middle of Feburary. Just as everyone else is worrying about floods, we are cheering on our way to work!
How will the session run?
For all of our WhiteWater Rafting Experiences, we meet at the Nae Limits centre in Ballinluig. We will brief everyone at the centre, make sure that your equipment fits and everyone gets changed in warm, clean changing rooms. We will then transport you to the river using our water friendly vehicles and then return you again safely at the end of the session so you can dry off and warm up with a hot cuppa.
Who can raft on the River Tay?
You must be over 8 years in the summer months and over 12 years when it is high, in the winter peak. Be over 4 foot 11 inches, and if you are over 16.5 stone, please call us for advice. (It does not mean you cannot join us, there are just some checks we need to make for health and safety)
If you have children, please take the time to read details about Family rafting and the questions that you should ask!
Please note: When the River Tay is low, you don't even have to be able to swim to join us on the River Tay. We only ask that you are water confident, so quite happy to bob arounding your bouyancy aid until we come and get you.... it is one thing to save a man and another to try and save a scared man...
