Is White Water Rafting Dangerous?

a group at nae limits taking part in a white water rafting activity
  • April 2, 2023
  • Matty

As with any outdoor activity, there are elements of white water rafting that could be considered dangerous if the correct procedures and risk assessments are not taken place. That is why we make safety our number one objective at Nae Limits.

Safety on our White Water Rafting Routes

A group white water rafting on the river tummel

Both of the routes we offer on the River Tay and the River Tummel are adequately risk assessed regularly to ensure that any new obstacles or changes in the terrain are assessed and deemed safe for the route our rafts go through. We also assess these routes when changing from Summer to Winter seasons due to the difference in water level and therefore rapids to ensure we know the correct level of ability to allow on each route.

Minimum age limits for White Water Rafting

We also change our minimum age limits with the seasons from Summer to Winter as in the colder months, the water level is much higher and the rapids more impactful. Nae Limits therefore only permits older children to take part in white water rafting during the Winter months.

Training is key

rafting with our guides and instructors

In order to provide a safe and fun experience while white water rafting we ensure all of our instructors undergo adequate safety and rafting training. This includes First Aid Outdoors Training, White Water Rescue Technician Certificates and IRF and SRA Raft Guide Level 3 Certificates.

Our guides will have assessed the route before each trip to ensure it is safe and predicable in order to ensure you have the most fun on your experience and feel that you are always in safe hands.

AALA Licensing

AALA Certification badge

As well as ensuring every activity has an in-depth safety procedure and risk assessment that is continuously reviewed, we also hold an AALA License for all of our activities which we can provide a copy of on request.

This license proves that we have taken the appropriate steps to ensure all of the activities provided by Nae Limits are carried out safely and comply with all relevant Health and Safety Legislation.

In Summary

If you are looking to go white water rafting without a qualified guide into unknown waters then this can be a highly dangerous experience. Ensure you know the proper safety advice before you go rafting, wear the appropriate safety gear including life jackets and wet suits, and if you are inexperienced only ever go rafting with a qualified and licensed provider such as Nae Limits.

A group of ten senior soldiers went canyoning as part of a team-building exercise. Considering that some of those attending had been in the army for 30+ years, we needed something that would stretch us as we have conducted adventure activities all over the world. This experience was amazing, something none of us had done before and it hit the mark.

Upper Bruar Canyoning was amazing. We went as a family, not for the faint-hearted but safe as houses! We all had the best time but chickened out of the 10m jump. The 6m jump was soo much fun as was the abseiling. Thank you!!

Really great day out, we did white water tubing and it was so much fun. Beautiful scenery, got properly wet and cold and finished with some cliff jumping. Guides were just great, very laid back and funny, but clearly watching safety issues all the time, and super helpful with anyone who was struggling.

I booked a Stag weekend with Nae Limits for 14 guys. The team at Nae Limits were excellent the whole way through, from planning and advising on activities beforehand, right through to the weekend itself. The activity team were excellent and had everything on hand for us on the day. The whole group commented on how great the weekend had been, and we can't thank the team enough!
