What is Canyoning?

2 people taking part in a canyoning trip descending the waterfalls
  • May 15, 2023
  • Matty

Canyoning is one of Nae Limits most popular activities, along with White Water Rafting and River Tubing. On the nearby Falls of Bruar, our Canyoning activities involve big slides and splashes as you navigate one of Perthshire’s most beautiful waterfalls. But what actually is Canyoning, and is it the activity for me? Read on to find out more..

The Nae Limits Definition of Canyoning

Canyoning, also sometimes known as Canyoneering, is the navigation and exploration of a mountain gorge via a series of waterfalls and pools. It’s an outdoor sport that’s suitable for every age and ability as long as you are brave enough to take the plunge.

The canyon in question is really a natural gorge that has been carved out of the side of a mountain by strong water currents from rivers or streams. This can create deep crevice’s within the rock leading to steep declines and even waterfalls! These waterfalls If carved out smoothly enough form natural toboggans or, as the everyday man may call them, slides into the pooling water below.

A number of different techniques are used in Canyoning and these can include abseiling, rapelling, rock climbing and bouldering, hiking, swimming, sliding and jumping. When canyoning you can reach points along the mountain face and in the water that usually could not be explored from the land. This means you can have exclusive access to some of the most magical pools and waterfalls that many do not know the location of.

Canyoning difficulty ranges depending on the route you take, it’s location and the time of year you choose to take part in your expedition. In the summer months when the water level is lower, there are more opportunities for sliding and climbing along the gorge, where as in the cooler months when the water level is higher, you can expect to take part in more cliff jumping and swimming.

Canyoning with Nae Limits

We currently offer three different canyoning routes, with a fourth opening up for 2023. Most of our Canyoning expeditions are carried out at various points in the Falls of Bruar waterfalls, but we also have one expedition on Dollar Canyon.

Lower Bruar Canyoning

The Lower Falls of Bruar is the perfect place to begin your Canyoning journey. This Canyoning experience has it all, from jumps to slides, expect to get wet and have loads of fun as you descend this spectacular canyon. Nae Limits will ensure this is a Canyoning experience you will never forget. Prices start at £65pp for a half day session and it is available for those aged 12 years plus.

Upper Bruar Canyoning

The Upper Falls Canyoning trip is the ultimate canyoning experience. This steeper and deeper section of Bruar Falls finds you committed to a stunning journey down a series of incredible waterfalls that include two tier slides and technical cliff jumps. You and your fellow canyoners will abseil from a 22m waterfall and explore the base of the deep ravine.  So if you’re confident with heights and looking for the next level up then this is the Canyoning adventure for you. Prices start at £70pp with a minimum age requirement of 14.

Dollar Canyoning

Dollar Canyon is great for beginners or intermediates and is just 45 minutes from Edinburgh. Dollar canyon is very accessible and holds some awesome features; jumps up to 5 meters, epic natural water flumes and many waterfalls (the most jaw-dropping being the two-tier waterfall over 25 meters!). Prices start at £85pp with a minimum age of 12 years.

Coming Soon…

Coming soon for 2023 is the Big Bruar Canyoning Expedition. More details to follow in the coming months so make sure you are signed up to our mailing list to be notified when this activity launches.

A group of ten senior soldiers went canyoning as part of a team-building exercise. Considering that some of those attending had been in the army for 30+ years, we needed something that would stretch us as we have conducted adventure activities all over the world. This experience was amazing, something none of us had done before and it hit the mark.

Upper Bruar Canyoning was amazing. We went as a family, not for the faint-hearted but safe as houses! We all had the best time but chickened out of the 10m jump. The 6m jump was soo much fun as was the abseiling. Thank you!!

Really great day out, we did white water tubing and it was so much fun. Beautiful scenery, got properly wet and cold and finished with some cliff jumping. Guides were just great, very laid back and funny, but clearly watching safety issues all the time, and super helpful with anyone who was struggling.

I booked a Stag weekend with Nae Limits for 14 guys. The team at Nae Limits were excellent the whole way through, from planning and advising on activities beforehand, right through to the weekend itself. The activity team were excellent and had everything on hand for us on the day. The whole group commented on how great the weekend had been, and we can't thank the team enough!
